Collages for Piet — Artist Statement
This series focuses on using the relationships between the elements on the plane as symbols representing how we, as individuals and a collective humanity, perceive ourselves in relation to God and others. Autonomy, concord, and division are concepts explored in this work.
Employing a geometric constructivism style and a limited palette, I fuse layers of acrylic-painted papers onto heavy-weight watercolor paper using heat. The papers utilized range from printed newspapers and book pages to Unryu and Kozo mulberry papers.
These three collages draw their structural foundations from sketches by Piet Mondrian, as featured in Michel Seuphor’s book "Abstract Painting."
